Incline Trainers are a special breed of treadmill
The least incline gradient among the incline treadmills here is 20% (ProForm). You’ll see the maximum incline gradient is 40% (NordicTrack). You can even get an incline treadmill with a negative (downhill) gradient (NordicTrack).
Incline trainers are for people who love hiking or wish to do hill training on a treadmill. Perhaps you live in a flat area offering few or no hills. Or, maybe you live in a cold climate and you like to continue hill training during the colder months.
These days there are more and more races that are purposely incorporating brutal hills in the course to make the course tougher. The people who do some hill training throughout the year will no doubt have an advantage when you encounter the hills.
Hill training on an incline treadmill is not just for runners
You might be an avid hiker, yet can’t get to hiking places as often as you like. You can maintain peak hiking fitness with a hill trainer so when you get back to the hills and trails, you won’t be deconditioned.
If you take hill training seriously, then consider an incline trainer treadmill instead of a regular treadmill. You can still run on flatter surfaces; an incline trainer gives you the option for doing some serious hill training.
