The question “do I need a 3.0 horsepower treadmill?” is a very common question.
Here’s my simple answers:
- If you’re over 6 feet tall and/or over 200 pounds, it’s probably a good idea.
- If you’re a demanding and/or competitive runner, it’s probably a good idea.
- If you’re not too concnerned about budget, then why not get more power than not enough.
- If you’re smaller and walk or jog lightly, then it’s not necessary.
- If you plan to become a competitive runner or are getting serious about running, then it’s probably a good idea.
Frankly, given the lowering prices of treadmills with a 3.0 horsepower motor these days, I figure, unless you are strapped financially, it’s not a bad idea to go for the extra horsepower. There are many 3.0 horsepower motor treadmills in the $1,000 to $2,000 price range. In fact, you can compare over a hundred 3.0 horsepower motor treadmills here (it’s a comprehensive chart I put together).
