Elliptical Buying Guide

Choosing the right elliptical trainer to buy is indeed a perplexing task. What with numerous brands, models and designs to choose from, you will surely be in a quandary on what to buy. Before stepping into a fitness equipment store, it is best you arm yourself with some helpful elliptical buying guide. Take a mental note of the following when you shop for an elliptical trainer.

1.    Consider the price.

How much do you intend to spend for an elliptical trainer? A budget in mind before shopping is always a practical advice. A rule of thumb is to get an elliptical trainer that costs not less than $1,000. Don’t be tricked that you get the same quality on cheaper ones. Quality elliptical trainers range from $500 – $4,500. Pick one that you can afford within this range even if it means not sticking to your budget a bit. Don’t worry the extra money spent is worth it. Don’t think of scrimping money for quality because it will turn out expensive in the long run. Cheaper quality machines won’t last requiring you to buy a new one in no time or you will most likely spend more on maintenance.

2.    Think of the user or users.

Who will use the elliptical trainer? Consider everybody’s weight and stride. Always check out the maximum weight capacity of the elliptical trainer. Be sure that the machine can accommodate your weight or other user’s weight. When it comes to stride length, bear in mind that the longer the stride length the better. To ensure a good work-out for everyone, an adjustable stride length or a 20” plus stride is recommended. Never buy an elliptical trainer with a stride shorter than the minimum of 18”.

3.    Compare the drive types.

Now the ultimate question – Which type is best? The rear, front or center drive?

  • Rear drive elliptical trainer is known for its silky smooth feel due mainly to the position of its drive. Another plus factor of this type is it is low on maintenance, some brands even require no maintenance at all.
  • Front drive elliptical trainer features a more comfortable pedal mechanics. Also, the front drive system offers a feel of climbing. However, the downside is it requires more maintenance.
  • Center drive elliptical trainer gives greater balance and efficiency of movements because the weight of the user is centered in the middle of the machine. Aside from requiring constant maintenance, this type is generally more expensive.
  • Front-drive elliptical trainers are generally easier to access than rear-drive elliptical trainers.

Though common consensus points to rear drive elliptical trainer giving a smooth ride, smoothness is actually subjective on one’s “feel” so as a word of caution don’t heed popular choice it is necessary that you ride and try the performance of its type before you decide.

4.    Evaluate the resistance and operation.

What variation does the elliptical offer? A repetitive work-out will eventually bore you. Thus, select an elliptical that offers challenging variation in operation and resistance. Choose one that offers a ramp for incline and moveable handles as an option for arms and upper body work-out. A magnetic resistance is suggested for a more challenging work out. However, always bear in mind that more added mechanics or operations means more parts to clean and maintain.

5.    Get the added features.

Aside from the basics, what added features do you want to aid you in achieving your fitness goal? Some elliptical trainers feature the following add-on technology: built-in heart rate monitor, built-in work out program and entertainment and display console.

6.  Elliptical access

If you are recovering from injury and/or have physical limitations, you should consider how easy it is to access the elliptical trainer. Front-drive elliptical trainers are typically easier to access than rear-drive elliptical trainers.

7.  Elliptical location

Consider the room where you will place your elliptical. A small frame is of course recommended to save on space. Also consider an elliptical machine that creates less noise. Lastly as a practical advice, always buy one with a warranty, the longer warranty offer the better. Why settle for a 90-day warranty when you can get a lifetime? Go for a reputable brand and manufacturer that has a local service center in your area.

8.  Elliptical foot pedals
