Features

Powerful Motor
  • The Proform Power 990 is quite powerful with its commercial grade 3.0 continuous HP motor. This motor offers more power than you will find with treadmills in the lower price range and it fans itself to prevent overheating. As if powerful operation from a motor that never overworks itself weren’t enough, the motor is also specially designed to run smooth for longer periods of time with barely a whisper or whir.
  • This is a very quiet, easy gliding treadmill for selling within this price range ($1,500 – $2,000 – prices may vary). The motor is definitely worth the price being asked.
Running Surface 20″ x 55″ – this is the biggest disappointment on this otherwise very nice treadmill.  At above $1,500 in cost, I would like to see at least a 60″ long running surface.  That sai, you may prefer a shorter running surface if you have less space.
Cushioned Belt
  • The belt is not only cushioned to better protect your knees and other joints of the lower body, but the amount of cushioning can be adjusted to the perfect level for your body. This means you can take away that cushioning if you want the feel of running outdoors on hard pavement while someone else in the home can easily add the cushioning if they have bad knees and need the protection.
  • This is a nice feature that helps reduce your risk of injuring yourself through the hard pounding that occurs when you run. Many treadmills in this price range have cushioned belts, but many do not allow you to adjust how much cushioning is used.
  • The belt measures 20 inches wide with a length of 55 inches. This is a bit short compared to many competitive treadmills selling in this price range, but it is still a nice sized belt that will allow most users to reach their natural walking or running stride comfortably.
  • Those who are very tall may look to other models that have a 60 inch or longer belt since it will feel more comfortable when hitting that longer stride length.
Maximum User Weight 325 pounds.
Incline/Speed
  • This treadmill will go up to 12 mph and will incline up to 12%. This offers adequate speed for most people to get in intense runs or interval training. The incline percentage is right on track with other treadmills selling in this price range and will allow users to increase intensity of workouts and really challenge their muscles.
  • For higher inclines for serious incline training, it may be helpful to look into incline trainers rather than treadmills. The incline on a treadmill like this is designed more to mimic hills and different levels of terrain rather than to deliver true incline training for lower body muscle development.
Monitoring Screen
  • The Proform Power 990 is equipped with a large console screen where you can watch constant feedback on your workout including how many calories you have burned, how fast you are walking or running, and what level of incline you are using. You can also easily select between different preprogrammed workouts and change the intensity of your workout with the simple touch of a button.
  • The console is nicely lit so it is never a struggle to see this feedback or control the volume and programming of your iPod if you are listening to music or charging the unit while you workout. You don’t get grainy, low quality speakers on the Power 990 treadmill. The console is equipped with high quality speakers that deliver your music loud, clear and sounding just as it should.
  • There is also a fan to ensure you remain cool during those longer, more intense workouts.
Console Workouts
  • Most people don’t get on a treadmill and just walk for hours on end in manual mode. They get on looking for those buttons which will walk them through challenging workouts so they don’t even have to worry about adjusting incline and speed. This treadmill really delivers if you are one of those people who expect a wide range of workouts programmed right into the console.
  • The Power 990 treadmill comes equipped with 16 different workouts. 4 of the workouts are designed to stimulate weight loss by burning tons of calories within an allotted period of time. 4 workouts will set specific lengths of time for your workout and the machine will automatically adjust speed and incline to ensure you get a great workout within that period of time. 4 workouts are designed to help you work on skills that will enhance performance in sports and other life activities.
  • The final 4 preprogrammed workouts are timed races so you can practice the 1 mile, 5K, 10K, and half marathon lengths right in your own home!
IFit Live Compatible
  • This treadmill is compatible with the iFit Live technology, but you  have to make a separate purchase of the module which connects directly onto the console of the treadmill so they can function together.
  • iFit Live allows you to workout with some of the best trainers in the world including Jillian Michaels from NBC’s hit show The Biggest Loser. You can also pull up real life scenery and mileage from running and walking courses all over the world. You see this real life scenery while you walk on your treadmill, making you feel as if you are actually there walking or running! You can even allow the machine to automatically adjust itself to mimic hills as they would actually feel on that course.
  • You can even connect with other iFit Live users through Facebook and run races against them! There is no better motivation to workout every day and get in shape when you can interact with other people from around the world while you do it!
Heart Rate Monitoring
  • The 990 Proform treadmill is equipped with heart rate  monitoring, but it does not have wireless monitoring. You have to hold your hands over sensors built into handlebars to get a reading. This means you cannot get a continuous reading throughout your workout unless you walk with your hands held down constantly to the handlebars.
  • Many treadmills selling over $1,000 do offer wireless heart rate monitoring utilizing a chest strap, so this may be one downfall to the Proform Power 990 treadmill. Those who aren’t as concerned with continuous heart rate monitoring may not mind this, but for some this will be a bad deal.
Design / Folding The Proform Power 990 is not a small sized machine. It is a very durable, high functional treadmill that will take up some room in the home. The good thing is the deck is designed to fold up so you can free up some space while the machine is not in use. In order to fold the deck you have to manually push it up, so care must be taken not to drop it as it can be quite heavy for some users.

Benefits

The biggest benefits to the Proform Power 990 are the adjustable cushioning on the tread belt, the extremely quiet operations, and the powerful motor that will last for many years. Those who can afford to add in the module for the iFit Live will find that a huge benefit as it enriches the workout experience like no other feature can.

Shipping Information

  • Right now you can get free shipping on the Proform Power 990 treadmill when you order it through the manufacturer’s website. This is a great way to save over a hundred bucks!
  • You can also pay additional for in-home delivery and/or treadmill assembly.

Dislikes

  • No wireless heart rate monitoring.
  • 55″ long running surface.  But I’m 6′ 3″ tall and prefer 60 inch long running sufracrs.

Warranty Information

  • Proform stands behind the frame and motor on this treadmill with a lifetime warranty. This is one of the best warranties you are going to find within this price range. It also covers other parts and labor for one year.

There really is only one minor drawback to the Proform Power 990 treadmill, and that would be the lack of wireless heart rate monitoring. Since you can still track heart rate through the handgrips this isn’t a huge deal breaker for most people, especially with all the other great features offered with this reasonable price range.

While the convenience features such as the high quality sound system and iFit Live compatibility packed onto a very commercial grade motor and a highly durable frame, this is definitely a bargain at the $1,500 price point.
