Is a 3.0 horsepower treadmill absolutely necessary? Not always. I wouldn’t buy a treadmill with less power, but then I weigh over 200 pounds and am over 6 feet tall.
If you’re a demanding and competitive runner, you probably want a treadmill with 3.0 HP. Also, if you’re larger and/or heavier more power is better.
However, if you’re smaller or only use a treadmill for walking, then horsepower in the 2.25 to 3.0 range may be sufficient for you.
Naturally, you’ll have to spend a little more for more power. The way I see it is for the nominal increase in price for 3.0 HP, you ensure you’ll have sufficient power whether you walk, hike, jog, run, and/or sprint.
You never know where your fitness will go. You might start off a walker, but may end up running in the future. Given you’ll have to spend several hundred dollars or more than a $1,000 dollars, you may as well secure sufficient power with a 3.0 horsepower motorized treadmill.
